Wait, they would have to have a dead-man switch, or else what would happen to Cloud City when Vader disarms (lol, pun intended) Luke?
EDIT: Just rewatched the scene, the light saber deactivates as soon as Luke's hand is severed, even though his hand goes with it.

I believe constant application of the Force is required to maintain a lightsaber, so as soon as a Jedi wills it to turn off, it's off (or if his concentration on it gets broken by, say, his arm getting cut off).
